GroundSwell Cannabis Boutique has been a medical dispensary since 2011, though their organization has been working with medical cannabis patients since 2009. They launched recreational sales in April of 2015. The building is over 3,000 square feet and includes separate medical and recreational spaces, an on-site massage room, and upstairs offices for a neighborhood-focused marketing company.
One of the reasons our organization was founded was that a doctor approached us looking at alternate solutions for patients with chronic pain,” says Noah Sodano, GroundSwell’s Director of Operations. Their business model originally focused on delivering medical cannabis to homebound patients but when changing regulations required them to have a physical dispensary, they knew that we couldn’t build just an average retail location. “We wanted to provide the same level of comfort and familiarity as when we were visiting patients in their own homes.” The partners came from diverse backgrounds: horticulture, entertainment, architecture, community organization and marketing.
The medical space uses backlit plexiglass and slats of locally-milled reclaimed pine to create a space for patients that is rich, warm and uniquely Colorado. The curving walls and ceiling of this contemporary apothecary are highlighted with small industrial touches of glass and metal. Flower is kept in frosted cylinders of glass, with edibles and other products displayed on shelving of raw natural pine. In contrast, the recreational space is bold and elegant, with a wall of natural light contrasted by dark walnut and steel. In the center of the room a stunning floating counter highlights flower and concentrates, while glass and edibles are displayed in a glowing recessed shelf which spans the width of the room.
Both spaces were designed by Christian Butler of Studio Limited, located in Denver, Colorado.

“We have around 30 employees spanning our retail center, our grow, management and operations,” says Sodano. “Our first priority is finding team members who share our values of putting patients first and creating a premium and welcoming boutique experience for everyone who walks through our doors. Beyond that, we’re a tightly-knit community so we look for people who bring their own passion and personality to blend with our family.”
